Canada/Quebec: Retail sales up in April, optimism for May

OTTAWA — Retail sales in Canada rose 1.1% to $65.9 billion in April, while they rose 0.9% in Quebec.

Statistics Canada reported on Wednesday that domestic sales rose in eight out of nine sub-sectors, with general merchandise retail and grocery retail posting the largest increases, up 3.3% and 1%, respectively.

Retail sales, which exclude gas stations, fuel dealers, and car and parts dealers, rose 1.5% in April.

In the automotive and parts dealers category, used car dealers and retailers of automotive parts, tires and accessories saw the largest increases, up 3.7% and 3.5%, respectively. Other car dealerships fell by 1.2%.

Sales rose 4.4% in Nova Scotia and 2.5% in New Brunswick, but fell 0.2% in Prince Edward Island.

Separately, Statistics Canada has produced a flash estimate of retail sales which suggests they rose 0.5% in May. However, due to its preliminary nature, this figure will be subject to revision.
