Canada is temporarily reducing the staff of its embassy in Haiti to the bare minimum

March 14, 2024 – Ottawa, Ontario – Global Affairs Canada

Global Affairs Canada issued the following statement today:

“Canada is committed to supporting Haiti and the Haitian people. Our immediate priority remains the safety of Canadians as we continue to closely monitor the security situation in Haiti.

“Global Affairs Canada continually assesses the security of its personnel and assets abroad through rigorous risk assessments. Due to the volatility of the situation, the lack of reliable supplies and the need to ensure an effective presence in a volatile environment, Canada is temporarily reducing staff at its embassy in Haiti to the bare minimum. The dismissed employees will continue to perform their duties from a third country. In similar situations, it is not uncommon for a mission’s strength to be temporarily reduced.

“During this difficult time, the Canadian Embassy will continue to support Canadians remaining in the country, as well as Haiti and the Haitian people. The Canadian Ambassador to Haiti will also remain in the country and continue to maintain dialogue with Haitian stakeholders and international partners towards the implementation of the political agreement. We will continue to support the solutions proposed by the Haitian people to resolve the crises at the political, security and humanitarian levels.

“The Canadian Embassy in Port-au-Prince, Haiti remains temporarily closed to the public. However, we maintain consular services for Canadians who need assistance in Haiti.

“Canadians requiring consular assistance in Haiti should contact the embassy at +011 (509) 2812, text 9000 or prncecs@international.gc.ca.

“Canadians in need of emergency consular assistance can contact Global Affairs Canada’s Emergency Watch and Response Center in Ottawa, open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week:
