Canada beats Peru 1-0 at the Copa America

Jonathan David scored in the 74th minutee Minute that saw Canada beat a South American country in a tournament for the first time in 24 years with a 1-0 victory over Peru at the Copa America on Tuesday.

Peru were outnumbered after Miguel Araujo was shown a red card in the 59th minutee Minute due to a tackle with studs on Jacob Shaffelburg. A video review was required to make the decision.

Under the orders of American head coach Jesse Marsch, who was hired last month, Canada celebrated its first victory in four games.

The Maple Leafs’ last win against a South American team was a 2-0 victory over Colombia in the Gold Cup final in 2000.

David’s goal, his 27e for Canada ended the national team’s 391-minute goalless streak. 26 of his goals were scored in competitive matches.

“This win is very important. It means we have everything we need for the last game [du groupe A contre le Chili] “To continue our journey,” said David. It was a difficult game, but we found a way to get the three points. »

Play was halted in first-half injury time when an assistant referee, who was running in the unshaded part of the stadium, collapsed and required medical attention. He got up briefly and was carried off the field on a stretcher.

In its first appearance at the Copa America, Canada (1-1) recovered from a 2-0 loss to Argentina, the reigning tournament champions. Peru began this edition with a 0-0 draw against Chile.

The Canadians will play their last match of the preliminary round against Chile in Orlando on Saturday. On the same day, Peru (0-1-1) will cross swords with Argentina in Miami Gardens.

On Tuesday, Argentina secured first place with a 1-0 win over Chile. One of the three remaining teams will also qualify for the quarter-finals.

Peru reached the semifinals in 2021 before losing to Brazil, failing to score for the ninth time in his last 12 games.

David scored when Cyle Larin passed to Shaffelburg, who handed him the ball on the other side of the field. David took two touches, beat goalkeeper Pedro Gallese near the penalty spot and sent the ball to the far post.

Quebec goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau made a save in second-half stoppage time and then blocked a free kick to maintain Canada’s lead.
