Canada will send four more Leopard 2 main battle tanks to Ukraine, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Friday.
Ottawa also said new sanctions will be imposed on 122 individuals and 13 organizations, including members of the lower house of Russia’s parliament, who voted on laws related to the war in Ukraine.
Ministers and other members of the cabinet of the President of Russia, Russian military officials, and family members of those who have already been subject to sanctions are also affected, Ottawa said.
“Canada has led the charge worldwide for imposing the toughest sanctions regime ever imposed on a major economy (…)” Trudeau said at a press conference in Toronto.
Canada’s Prime Minister said G7 leaders reiterated to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during a discussion earlier today that “our support for Ukraine will remain unwavering for as long as is needed”.
A year after the start of the war, Ukraine is preparing for a counter-offensive with weapons from the West.
The first of the promised dozen Leopard tanks were also delivered to Kiev, Poland announced on Friday.
Last week, Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly pointed out that Canada was pressuring other allies to supply more heavy weapons to Ukraine as promises of massive tank supplies had yet to materialize.
