CUPE is part of a broad coalition calling on the federal government to comply with a United Nations decision calling on Canada to ensure access to health care for all, regardless of immigration status.
The decision of the United Nations Human Rights Committee was made thanks to the courageous fight of Nell Toussaint. As an activist for universal healthcare and human rights, Nell was denied the medical care she needed because of her immigration status. She died on January 9, 2023, but her fight for justice continues.
It is important to increase pressure by February 12, the deadline set by the United Nations. Have your voice heard by signing and sharing the Canadian Health Coalition's online campaign for key federal ministers.
CUPE signed a Joint letter We call on key ministers, including Health Minister Mark Holland and Justice Minister Arif Virani, to accept the recommendations of the United Nations Human Rights Council in its review of Canada's human rights record to ensure access to health care without discrimination based on immigration status.
CUPE celebrates Nell's memory and continues her fight by paying tribute to her during Black History Month 2024.
