By-elections will be held in British Columbia on June 24th

Voters in the Langford-Juan de Fuca district on Vancouver Island and Vancouver-Mount Pleasant in the metropolis will go to the polls on June 24 to choose the successors of former Prime Minister John Horgan and former Minister Melanie Mark.

The New Democratic Party (NDP), which will seek to retain the two constituencies, and BC United and the Green Party, the three parties represented in the Legislative Assembly, have already found their candidates.

In Langford-Juan de Fuca, school administrator Ravi Parmar will run for the NDP, while autism activist Elena Lawson will represent BC United and health activist Camille Currie will run for the Greens.

In Vancouver-Mount Pleasant, Aboriginal leader Joan Phillip will represent the NDP, while businessman Jackie Lee will run for BC United and emergency management expert Wendy Hayko will wear the Greens’ colors.

The prime minister had already announced the elections would be held before the start of the autumn session and said he would prefer not to hold them in July or August.

The NDP currently holds 55 of the 87 seats in the Legislative Assembly, compared to 27 for BC United and 2 for the Greens. The last seat is held by an independent deputy.

Pre-voting will take place from June 16th to 21st and the official voting date is June 24th.
