Former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney is gradually recovering from prostate cancer after undergoing treatment in the fall, several media outlets revealed on Wednesday.
Mr. Mulroney’s son Mark told him Toronto Star that his 84-year-old father underwent “very difficult treatment” in November and December but is expected to have “fully recovered” within a few weeks.
Mr. Mulroney was diagnosed in Montreal last fall and began treatment.
His daughter Caroline Mulroney also spoke about the ordeal endured by the 18th Prime Minister in Canadian history.
“My family is comforted by all of the support we are receiving from across the country,” current Ontario Secretary of Transportation in Doug Ford’s government said in a CBC News statement.
Progressive Conservative Brian Mulroney came to power in 1984 and served as Prime Minister until 1993, when he resigned and was replaced by Kim Campbell at the helm of his party, and therefore the country.
After his tenure as Prime Minister, Brian Mulroney became involved in business, including as CEO of Quebecor.
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in Canada, affecting one in nine men in their lifetime. In 2022, approximately 24,600 Canadians could expect to develop prostate cancer and 4,600 could die from it, according to the Canadian Cancer Society.
