WASHINGTON – US Secretary of State Antony Blinken again calls on India to work with Canada to bring Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s killers to justice.
Mr Blinken confirmed that he had conveyed this message on Thursday during his meeting with Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, India’s foreign minister.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said publicly that there was “credible” information about the Indian government’s involvement in the shooting of Mr. Nijjar, a prominent Sikh separatist and Canadian citizen.
Blinken says the United States has been in close contact with both countries about the allegations since Trudeau made them public in the House of Commons earlier this month.
A State Department report on the meeting between the gentlemen. Blinken and Jaishankar did not mention the controversy, but global diplomacy experts say it is not surprising.
The allegations have put the United States in a delicate situation as the Biden administration courts India, which is developing a geopolitical bulwark against China’s growing influence.
“We are very concerned about the allegations made by Canada and Prime Minister Trudeau,” Mr. Blinken said at a news conference on Friday. Those responsible must be held accountable and we hope our friends in Canada and India will work together to resolve this issue.”
