Canada’s Bianca Andreescu was eliminated in the round of 16 at the tournament in San Diego on Thursday after losing to American Coco Gauff in three sets 4-6, 6-4, 3-6.
Andreescu struggled on serve in defeat. She picked up just 59% of the points on her first ball, as opposed to 84% for Gauff, who found a way out despite six double faults.
The Ontarian started the final set with a break from her opponent, but while leading 3-2, she was broken twice to eventually lose by 2:31.
Things didn’t start well for Gauff, who got a break early in the game, but she recovered the steal in game four and took the first commitment, breaking Andreescu again in game 10.
Andreescu advanced to the second round after beating the Russian Liudmila Samsonova 7:6 (7/1), 4:6, 6:2 in three sets.
Gauff now has a date with Poland’s Iga Swiatek as the WTA Queen defeated China’s Qinwen Zheng 6-4 4-6 6-1.
Swiatek had to deal with a light drizzle that resulted in a 30-minute stoppage immediately after the game’s first point, as well as a brief stoppage in Act II, holding off Qinwen to advance to the quarterfinals.
It was Swiatek’s 61st win on the WTA Tour in 2022. She has held the top spot in the world rankings since April 4.
The two players separated in the first two sets 4:4. Swiatek smashed Qinwen to win the first set, but the Chinese returned her to the favorite in the second set.
The third set was Swiatek’s affair, who ended the debate by scoring four straight runs to book the crucial break against Qinwen.
