If the Canadians win the 2023 draft pick No. 1 of the Panthers they’re holding should they try to get an up-and-coming keeper in return?
Many supporters and observers believe so. But there, in her blind spot, is Samuel Montembeault.
According to former NHL defenseman Philippe Boucher, the 26-year-old bouncer is perhaps the simplest, but most importantly, the best possible solution for the club’s future on the net.
“Available goalkeepers who have potential for a first-round pick, I don’t think there will be any,” he told “JiC” for the first time on Friday evening.
“Before I look elsewhere I would direct my energies to Montembeault (…) a small sentimental offer, you like playing in Montreal, small $10 million for four years. If I were Kent Hughes I would try yourself.” , he said.
According to him, the ceiling for the Quebec goalkeeper is probably not yet reached.
“He’s improving game by game, week by week, we can think we might have a number one in the making,” said Boucher, who also believes young Cayden Primeau, another CH hope at the net, probably won’t be a starting goaltender in the NHL.
