Health Canada has reminded the public of the risks of modifying or misusing lithium-ion batteries in electric mobility devices.
This applies in particular to scooters and electric bicycles.
The recall follows an increase in fires related to these products in North America in recent years. At least 208 fires or overheating incidents were reported between April 1 and April 20um January 2021 and November 28, 2022 in the United States, with at least 19 deaths.
The Laval Fire Department has also reported several such incidents since early 2023, including two in which fires broke out because spare batteries for use in sweepers were bought through sales websites.
The Health Organization and Transport Canada recommend that electrical equipment and its batteries meet ANSI/CAN/UL 2272 (Electrical Systems for Personal Mobility Devices) and ANSI/CAN/UL 2849 (Electrical Systems for Bicycles) standards. electric).
In case of modification, the batteries must be replaced with original parts directly from the manufacturer or supplier.
The ministry also emphasizes the importance of never modifying the batteries and not making homemade models. It is also not recommended to add external batteries to increase the voltage or capacity of the electrical device. (NP)
