Australia: Sebov passes, Galarneau bows

Canada’s Katherine Sebov won her match in the second round of Australian Open qualifiers on Wednesday and is one win away from the main draw in the first major tournament of the season.

Sebov, 191st in the world, defeated local favorite Priscilla Hon, 169th, in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.

The meeting lasted 1h02.

Sebov had 16 winners in the duel, but still committed 31 unforced errors. It was disastrous for her rival as Hon managed just three winning shots and had 30 unforced errors.

In the next round, Sebov meets Swiss Simona Waltert, 129.

In the women’s category, Canadian Carol Zhao lost in the second qualifying round to French Clara Burel, 17th seeded, 6:7 (4), 6:4, 7:6 (2).

Galarneau packs up

In the men’s Alexis Galarneau of Quebec, 206th, fought hard against Peruvian Juan Pablo Varillas, fifth in qualifying and 104th in the world, but lost in three sets 6-7(8) 6-3 6-4 in the final of the second qualifying round of the same tournament.

The meeting lasted 2h42.

Galarneau hit 10 aces and double faulted twice during the duel. He only had one chance to break his rival’s serve but couldn’t. On the other hand, Varillas has been successful twice seven times.
