Toronto prodigy Summer McIntosh broke a second world record of the week, this time winning the 400-meter individual medley in 4:25.87 at the 2023 Canadian Swimming Trials on Saturday night.
McIntosh broke the record held by Hungarian Katinka Hosszu at the Rio 2016 Olympics.
The 16-year-old from Toronto said she was “moved” to celebrate the moment with members of her family. “[Leur présence] really helped me in the last 100 meters of the race,” she said, according to CP 24.
McIntosh, who caught national attention at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics where she was the youngest competitor at 14, set a record for the first time in the 400-meter freestyle on Tuesday, which she completed in 3:56.08. This was a record previously set by Australia’s Ariarne Titmus last May.
The Canadian Swimming Trials, which have been held in Toronto all week, conclude on Sunday. Having already won two gold medals at the 2022 World Aquatics Championships (and four medals in total), Summer McIntosh is preparing to accompany the Canadian delegation to the 2023 tournament, which will be held July 14-30 in Fukuoka, Japan .
