Montreal Alouettes defenseman Ciante Evans was dominant in the team’s first game of 2023.
On Tuesday, three days after the 19-12 win over the Ottawa Redblacks, the 30-year-old American was voted Defensive Player of the Week in the Canadian Football League (CFL).

Evans had two interceptions and as many tackles, including a loss. He also batted an assist against the Ottawa club.
This season, the veteran returns to the nest. He has played with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats for the past two seasons after playing the 2019 season with the Sparrows. A Texas native, he began his CFL career with the Calgary Stampeders (2015–2018).
Evans was also named to the Week 1 All-Star Team along with teammates Avery Williams (linebacker) and David Côté (kicker).
Such was the case with former Alouettes wide receiver Eugene Lewis. In his first game for the Edmonton Elks, he caught five passes for 148 yards and one touchdown. However, his team lost 17-13 to the Saskatchewan Roughriders and one Trevor Harris.
The Alouettes are enjoying their first bye of the season this week. They return to action with a visit to the Tiger-Cats in Hamilton on Friday 23 June.
