Almost -40°C, feels like -50°C: extreme cold not far from Quebec

The presence of an anticyclone will wide open the door to the polar air of Siberia. This particularly icy mass of air will therefore have the opportunity to slide into the southern United States, including much of Canada.

The cold will no doubt be extreme in western Canada. In southern Alberta and the Rocky Mountains, mercury could even drop to -40°C. This could mean temperatures almost 30°C colder than usual for some areas.

Feels like temperatures could reach -50, especially for the town of Banff. Calgary, meanwhile, could expect a chill near -45.

This polar wave peaks between Tuesday and Thursday. She is said to be losing feathers then, but will extend her visit to nearly a week.

At such temperatures, real health hazards are possible. Frostbite can occur very quickly and care should be taken around the affected areas.

Quebec, that black sheep

Eventually, Quebec would be spared this extraordinary temperature anomaly. As western Canada trembles, the province of La Belle gets a shiver down its spine. The numbers on the thermometer could drop to six or seven degrees below seasonal norms, but no more.

It’s an impressive system to thank. This low pressure area is designed to effectively prevent the intense cold from reaching Quebec.
