It has now been more than a decade since Alex Kovalev left the National Hockey League (NHL) after a brief 14-game stint with the Florida Panthers in 2012–2013. Despite the end of his playing career and the start of a new career as a coach, “the Artist” still has the same passion for hockey as he did in his prime.
Even though a return to the rink has been out of sight for a long time, the Russian admitted in an interview with Nicolas Cloutier of TVA Sports that he was open to the idea of returning to an organization in the Bettman circuit, but under certain conditions.
“I would like that, but it would have to be an offer that makes sense for me. If I am asked to travel from one end to the other to recruit and manage prospects, I am not the right candidate. I want to stay with the team and be on the ice with the players” – Alex Kovalev
Although he had previously claimed in an interview with The Athletic that he had had discussions with the New York Rangers and the Montreal Canadiens in the past about a job with either organization, he never had a contract offer other than public relations.
“Necas’ agent, Michael Deutsch, is from Eclipse Sports Management, which represented me in my games. He asked me to advise his client and I accepted.”
Although he only played five seasons in Montreal, Alex Kovalev left a legacy for a generation of fans thanks to his quick hands that could execute masterful feints in the most unexpected moments. A true puck wizard, he was the last Canadiens player to average more than a point per game during the 2007-2008 season. His experience could certainly benefit several current players in the organization and, who knows, maybe help Nick Suzuki reach the points per game milestone on his turn.
For the youngest who may not have seen Alex Kovalev play yet, this is the moment that will remain in the memory of all CH fans.
