While our experts and former National Hockey League goaltenders Éric Fichaud and Patrick Lalime are excited about Samuel Montembeault’s progress, they show little confidence in Cayden Primeau, who needs to be wary of Jakub Dobes.
“I’ve said it before, I don’t have a lot of confidence in him,” Fichaud admitted on TVA Sports on Wednesday night. And it has nothing to do with his game against the Bruins. I’m not convinced he can be the backup goalie Montembeault needs.”
“Primeau’s game hesitates too much,” Lalime noted. Too much inconsistency in his game, even within a game. He can have a good time and then collapse.”
One wonders if young Dobes, the Laval Rocket’s number one goalie and the organization’s fifth-round pick in 2020 (136th overall), could take over the utility position in Montreal sooner rather than later.
“Dobes had a good camp, that can put a little pressure on [sur Primeau] possibly,” Lalime noted.
“Dobes has excellent potential,” confirmed Fichaud. Of course it’s not easy for a young goalkeeper like Primeau not to play often, but he can’t avoid three or four in a row.”
