Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid is in fine form these days, as some National Hockey League (NHL) teams have seen recently.
The Montreal Canadiens, who were defeated 5-3 by number 97 and his supporters on Saturday, can take comfort in the knowledge that he isn’t the NHL leader’s only casualty in the Art Ross quest. On Wednesday, McDavid had two goals and as many assists as four days earlier. Another brilliant performance allowed his team to torpedo the Arizona Coyotes 8-2.
To say that the renowned striker is dangerous in the opposition net is an understatement. After drawing with the New York Islanders on November 23, he had 17 points in seven games.
For the full season he has 52, eight more than teammate Leon Draisaitl and is obviously well positioned to win a fifth title of his career. He is also the first player since Wayne Gretzky in 1987-88 to have 50 points in 27 games early in the season. He is the sixth to do so in the last 30 years.
“You tell yourself they’re at their peak. They stay at that peak for a while but only get better as the games progress. It’s nice to see,” defenseman Evan Bouchard told the Edmonton Sun a few days ago about the McDavid-Draisaitl duo.
This season, the club captain has accumulated at least four points in six games. He has three points in two other games and has been ruled out a total of four times so far. Fourth in the Pacific Division, Edmonton is 15-12-0 and hosts the Minnesota Wild on Friday.
