Joshua Roy, jewel of the Montreal Canadiens, scored twice in Canada’s 6-1 preseason win over Slovakia in Moncton, New Brunswick on Wednesday.
Roy batted in the second and third to push the Maple Leaf into a wildly uneven game.
It was Kirby Badger’s little brother, Colton, who first smeared the top scorer. The Chicago Blackhawks contender jumped on a bouncing puck at the edge of the net to hit Patrik Andrisik.
Nevertheless, the Slovaks cut a good figure in the first third. They aimed seven shots at Benjamin Gaudreau’s cage and twice found themselves in a massive attack.
Head coach Dennis Williams seemed to have roused his side at the break, however, as Canada gave their rivals absolutely nothing in the middle stages, dominating the penalty shoot-out column 23-1.
Brandt Clarke doubled the lead by taking advantage of a return throw from Logan Stankoven. Then, just 21 seconds later, Roy demonstrated his playing skills for the umpteenth time: he showed patience before spotting fellow Quebec Major Junior Hockey League colleague Zach Dean in the slot.
Unhappy with that three-goal lead, Canada threaded the needle twice in six seconds early in the third period. Brennan Othmann beat Andrisik with a quick wrist shot and Roy added the icing on the cake by hitting the net with a backhand shot.
Dylan Günther also added his grain of salt in numerical superiority.
Canada can even boast of being the author of each of the duel’s seven goals, while Shane Wright accidentally slipped the puck into his own net on a backhand throw-in. The goal went to a slip by Samuel Honzek.
The Canadian formation will complete their preparation calendar against the strong Finns on Friday.
