forest fires | Canada and the United States sign a cooperation agreement

(OTTAWA) Canada and the United States signed a memorandum of understanding on Thursday to better coordinate their fight against wildfires. Since the start of the season, one of the worst in decades, more than 1,500 American firefighters have come to the country to fight the blazes.

“In the past, we have responded when working with the United States on erasure [les feux], said Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson. And that understanding is much broader to deal with a future where we expect massive wildfires. »

The two countries intend to exchange information to prevent these fires. “How can we use technology more efficiently, including Canada’s access to satellite imagery,” he added.

Secretary Wilkinson was flanked by Secretary of State for Emergency Preparedness Bill Blair and US Ambassador to Canada David Cohen. The latter indicated that the memorandum of understanding will make it possible to better organize the work of all Canadian and American agencies involved in fighting forest fires.

“There was always a desire to help, it was never a problem,” Cohen said. But sometimes organizing in the middle of a crisis takes longer than we would like. »

The Memorandum of Understanding provides a structure for faster cooperation between the two governments.
