Ottawa wants to tighten the screw to further regulate the use of pesticides in Canada.
Ottawa has decided to ban the use of cosmetic pesticides on federal territory. In addition, Health Canada released a letter of intent on Tuesday, marking the start of consultations on proposed changes to pest control product regulations.
“Health Canada has reinstated the science-based process for evaluating acceptable limits for elevated pesticide residues, consistent with international recommendations,” the Canadian government said in a statement.
Canada’s Environment and Climate Change Minister will produce data to drive a sustainable approach to pesticide management in the country. The goal is to better understand the impact of pesticides on the environment.
“Only by taking a whole-of-government approach can we achieve sustainable use of pesticides in the interests of our health, the environment and wildlife,” said Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos. By taking these first steps today [mardi]”We are paving the way for stricter pesticide management in Canada.”
Recall that in July 2021, the Ordre des agronomes du Québec said it was surprised by Ottawa’s decision to raise acceptable levels of glyphosate in food and called for more transparency in the pesticide consultation process. Glyphosate residues have been found in several foods.
Last year, the Parti Québécois (PQ) called for its ban, as did neonicotinoids, as these pesticides contributed to high mortality rates in bees.
