The province had promised to build this hospital’s fifth operating room in March 2022.
This is a very important milestone in the history of Concordia Hospital
says Carrie Fruehm, the company’s CEO.
This expansion represents a major step forward in our mission to bring care, healing and hope to our patients and to meet the growing demand for joint replacement surgery.
She keeps going.
The hospital also added four inpatient beds and hired an orthopedic surgeon, as well as new nurses, orderlies, and other specialized rehabilitation and anesthesia staff.
The province provided $5.9 million for the hospital’s expansion, while the Concordia Foundation raised $350,000.
Concordia Hospital in northeast Winnipeg is the largest joint replacement surgery site in Manitoba.
According to Manitoba Health Secretary Audrey Gordon, more than 3,000 surgeries were performed there last year, including more than 1,900 hip or knee replacement surgeries or day surgeries.
The new operating room will be open seven days a week, allowing for 1,000 additional surgeries per year.
Since the pandemic, Manitoba has struggled with a large medical intervention backlog. The government has drawn the ire of the opposition and unions by signing agreements to send Manitoba patients to health care facilities across the United States.
In a statement Monday, Manitoba’s New Democratic Party blamed the government for not opening the new operating room sooner.
The progressive Conservative government promised the opening of this operating theater in December 2022 but delayed the opening by six months
said Uzoma Asagwara, the party’s health spokeswoman.
