The New Jersey Devils settled an important case Thursday by signing forward Jesper Bratt on an eight-year deal that could have faced pay arbitration this summer.
According to Sportsnet network hockey expert Elliotte Friedman, the 24-year-old hockey player agreed to a $63 million pact; Consequently, he will earn an average of $7.875 million per season, which is the same pact as that of Montreal Canadiens captain Nick Suzuki. Ironically, Bratt is number 63 on the Newark roster. The Swede was awarded $5.45 million in 2022-2023 after a salary arbitration.

“Keeping Jesper Bratt under our roof for a long period of time has always been a priority and both parties are pleased with this arrangement,” General Manager Tom Fitzgerald said in a statement. I recognize and emphasize Jesper’s commitment to this organization. We believe he is a special player and an important part of our core that will help us bring the Stanley Cup back to New Jersey.”
Last season, the winger contributed to his team’s success, which reached the semifinals of the Eastern Conference and finished second in the Metropolitan section. He had 32 goals and 41 assists for 73 points in 82 games and added 6 points in 14 playoff games.
Arbitration for Meier
If Bratt’s record has been good, it might be different with another top striker. According to the ESPN network, the Devils would initiate arbitration proceedings with Timo Meier.
Whistleblower Kevin Weekes reported that the San Jose Sharks offered the Swiss player more than $9 million to keep his services, but he was ultimately sent to New Jersey before the trade deadline.
Meier was one of the main targets of this last trading window, he managed to set a good pace even when the Sharks were bottom of the table. By forgoing four players and high draft picks, the Devils were able to win the man who becomes a restricted free agent on the 1stum July.
The right winger scored 66 points in 78 games last season, including 14 in 21 games with the Devils. However, he was quiet in the playoffs with four points in 11 games.
Meier has made $6 million a year over the past four campaigns.
