(Toronto) Rory McIlroy will attempt to win the Canadian Open for a third consecutive year in Toronto next week.
The 34-year-old Northern Irishman, ranked No. 3 in the world, is the headlining entrant among those announced by Golf Canada and event sponsor RBC on Friday.
The PGA tournament will be held June 8-11 at the Oakdale Club.
McIlroy won the Canadian Championship in 2019 and successfully defended his title in 2022. Due to the pandemic, the tournament had to be canceled for two years.
We’ll also see reigning US Open champion Matthew Fitzpatrick, eighth in the world, as well as other well-known Europeans such as Tommy Fleetwood, Shane Lowry and Justin Rose.
Note the scheduled presence of 29-year-old Ontario native Corey Conners in a Canadian group of 20 golferse in the world.
Also registered are Ontario’s Mackenzie Hughes and British Columbians Adam Svensson, Nick Taylor and Adam Hadwin. All are regulars in PGA tournaments.
The tournament has not been won by a Canadian since 1954.
Pat Fletcher then won at the Point Gray Club in Vancouver.
The side shows on Friday and Saturday feature the Black Eyed Peas and Alanis Morrissette respectively.
