Quebecers spent $16.1 billion online in 2021, half of it on Amazon, whose presence in the shopping landscape continues to grow around the world. Despite being accused of wanting to destroy local trade and pollute the planet with its deliveries and packaging, the American giant, which generates more than $500 billion in annual sales, presented data on Wednesday arguing that its presence, on the contrary, benefits the community.

Amazon has 1,500 full-time and part-time employees in Quebec, compared to 25,000 in Ontario, out of 40,000 in Canada. These employees work administratively, technically and operationally at the company’s facilities, which has a fulfillment center, two sorting centers, three delivery stations and a data center in Quebec.

Amazon has 41,000 affiliates in Canada, mostly SMEs. These partners increased their sales by 20% in 2021. They have sold around 100 million products to Amazon customers and created more than 50,000 jobs through those sales.

This primarily concerns the social security contributions to be paid by the employer. The rest comes from taxes levied on sales and paid to governments. Amazon does not have specific numbers for Quebec.

The company has taken measures for its energy consumption, especially for transport and packaging. Paper-padded envelopes, which would reduce the packaging volume, are being examined. Amazon is investing in renewable energy generation and has announced two solar projects in Alberta that will bring the company’s total output to 450 megawatts.
