New Canadian sanctions against Iran over human rights abuses

Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly announced today that these measures target one entity, Rajaei Shahr Prison, a site of state executions, and nine people.

Among them are some members of the moral policewho arrested Masha Amini, whose death sparked anger and sparked major protests against the Iranian regime.

The young woman died after being arrested by vice squads on September 13 wear inappropriate clothing. He was pronounced dead in hospital on September 16, according to state television and his family.

The deputy commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces in Sistan and Balochistan provinces, where crackdowns on protests have claimed the lives of dozens of civilians, has also been targeted by the latest sanctions.

Canada is also cracking down on the executives of Paravar Pars, a major Iranian drone maker that supplies Russia.

The sanctions imposed prohibit any transaction with the individuals and entities listed in the Schedule, effectively freezing the assets they may hold in Canada.

Persons listed for serious and systematic human rights violations are also barred from entering Canada under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
