The Montreal Alouettes selected defenseman Jonathan Sutherland with their fifth pick overall in the Canadian Football League (CFL) draft on Tuesday night.
The Ottawa native, who can also play as a linebacker, played college football at Penn State. He wasn’t drafted by an NFL team last week but was signed as a free agent with the Seattle Seahawks.
“It’s an honor,” Sutherland replied via video conference, casually mentioning that his mother, Sylvie Cloutier, is from Montreal and that his father, Everton, also lived there. I’m grateful for this opportunity in Seattle, but also for this one in Montreal.
The Sparrows also held the seventh pick due to the deal with Vernon Adams Jr. They caught defender Lwal Uguak. The Edmonton native played for the University of Connecticut. The Alouettes also have the 13th pick of this auction.
In the first round of talks, the Ottawa Redblacks targeted offensive lineman Dontae Bull, a product of Fresno State University. With the second pick, the Edmonton Elks added Quebec linebacker Michael Brodrique from the University of Montreal Carabins.
