SpaceX and Rogers bring satellite telephony to Canada

The Canadian operator Rogers Communications announced that it had signed an agreement with SpaceX to provide nationwide satellite phone coverage, potentially enabling Canadians to communicate in remote areas where there is no traditional wireless network.

The technology would be deployed using low-orbit satellites star link by SpaceX and radio spectrum by Rogers. Initially, only SMS would be available, with voice and data services gradually being added.

Although Rogers has invested in 5G technology and currently offers the largest 5G wireless network in the country, the company also wants to expand wireless coverage and provide access to 911 in more remote areas.

The satellite phone coverage is envisaged to be compatible with all 5G and 4G smartphones and support text and multimedia messaging. All Canadians could reach 911 as first responders and emergency services update their emergency texting systems.
