Behind the scenes of the Mike Matheson deal

Tony Marinaro had the opportunity to host Mike Matheson on his podcast on Wednesday and he returned to his interview with the Canadians’ defense attorney on Thursday during his segment with Jean-Charles Lajoie.

The one who picked up 34 points in his first season in Montreal admitted he had no thoughts of leaving the Penguins, even though he felt something was afoot.

“He didn’t expect that trade, but he did expect something to happen in Pittsburgh. They had nine defenders who had one-way contracts. He thought he had done well the two years in Pittsburgh. He found that he had made progress. In the sophomore year he thought he had an improvement over his freshman year. He was surprised to be traded,” Marinaro explained.

According to the analyst, Matheson agreed to think outside the box when asked to comment on his relationship with his new head coach.

“He spoke to me about Martin St-Louis and told me that he has two outstanding qualities. He is able to motivate a group, even if it is difficult to motivate him due to the difficult situation. His other quality is that he is able to talk to the group while helping players individually. It’s not easy, but he’s doing it beautifully.”
