Last February: Decrease in the number and rate of job vacancies in Canada

MONTREAL — The number of job vacancies in Canada fell 4% in February to 841,300, the lowest total since August 2021.

Statistics Canada reports that February’s decline offset the previous month’s 3% gain in January.

Health and social work vacancies fell 10.1% in February to 143,800. Nonetheless, the number of job vacancies in this sector remained the highest among all sectors for the eighth straight month.

In education, the number of job offers fell by 16%.

Statistics Canada found that among provinces and territories, the highest number of job vacancies in February were in Ontario with 302,400 and Quebec with 212,800 and 13,200 in New Brunswick.

However, the federal agency reports that the job vacancy rate, which is the number of vacancies as a percentage of total labor demand, was 5.2% in Quebec in February, compared to 4.4% in Ontario and 4% in New Brunswick.

Across Canada, the job vacancy rate fell 0.2 percentage points to 4.7% in February.
