The international arrest warrant issued at the hearing by the President of the Assizes will be transmitted to the competent Canadian authorities through the Federal Chancellery and probably the Department of State. Then it has to be implemented in Canada. For the record, it took 6 long years to execute the first international arrest warrant issued by Mr Justice Trevidic.

Two contradictory elements on the balance sheet

The first is that after a three-week adversarial hearing, during which Mr Diab was duly represented and defended, the specially constituted Paris Assize Court reached a verdict that carries far more weight than an arrest warrant for the purpose of a possible indictment. This would likely favor extradition. But on the other hand, there are the very active support groups for Mr. Diab in Canada, the pressure being put on the Canadian government, the positioning of Prime Minister Trudeau, who stated 2018 after Diab was released and returned to Canada, I quote “What happened to him should never have happened”. Finally, H. Diab has filed an initial extradition lawsuit against the Canadian government, demanding $90 million in damages. The French condemnation may weaken this demand. But in any case, the outcome of this extradition process will have a political aspect.

Delivery from Canada to France

Once Mr Diab is extradited or otherwise arrested he is entitled to a new personal trial, then all the remedies available in the democracy that is our country, contrary to what the supporters of H. Diab Crying injustice and a New Dreyfus Affair.
