TORONTO, April 20, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — To support ALUS’ efforts to quantify the carbon sequestration resulting from nature-based climate solutions implemented by ALUS farmers, the RBC Foundation is investing through the mediation of Techno Nature RBC $ 1.5 million the project. ALUS carbon quantification projects will help inform the development of a group ecosystem credit that includes carbon sequestration and can be spent by Project New AcreTM, ALUS’ ESG investment platform.

ALUS is a national charity that supports farmers who are establishing nature-based solutions such as planting native trees and shrubs in marginal or unprofitable areas of their land. The ALUS program is piloted by 38 communities across Canada. More than 1,600 ALUS participants are actively involved in the management and nurturing of nature-based solutions in agriculture.

ALUS is working with Albo Climate to recalibrate its remote sensing technology to quantify above-ground biomass from its tree and shrub planting projects and soil organic carbon from grassland projects. ALUS also works with proven EarthOptics sensor technology to quantify the impact of best grazing practices. Funding from RBC Tech Nature will help continue this work.

We are grateful to the RBC Foundation for supporting our work through Techno Nature RBC, says Mary-Ellen Anderson, Director of Special Projects and Innovation at ALUS. Your investment supports ALUS’ carbon quantification projects, which are essential for assessing the ecosystem services generated by nature-based climate solutions in agricultural settings. This investment will also make it possible to develop a group ecosystem loan designed for companies that want to achieve carbon neutrality, improve water quality and increase biodiversity in an efficient and transparent way.

The RBC Tech for Nature program is helping to accelerate technology-driven, green solutions to combating climate change and supporting the conservation of the planet’s most precious resource: its natural ecosystems. RBC Nature Tech is an important part of RBC’s climate strategy, This demonstrates RBC’s commitment to clean economic growth and supporting its customers in the transition to carbon neutrality.

“Nature-based solutions play an important role in climate change, and we’re excited to partner with organizations like ALUS that support farmers, communities and the planet,” said Jennifer Livingstone, RBC Vice President, Climate. Climate change and nature loss are interconnected challenges. It’s important that we work together to accelerate innovation that enables progress on both fronts.

This latest $1.5 million donation marks the RBC Foundation’s fourth investment in ALUS through Techno Nature RBC and confirms RBC’s commitment to building long-term partnerships to advance solutions to climate change.

About ALUS and New AcreTM Project

ALUS (originally an acronym for Alternative Land Use Services) is a national charity that provides expertise, resources and direct financial support to a network of 38 communities in six provinces where more than 1,600 agricultural producers are establishing and nurturing nature-based solutions on their land . In doing so, they produce ecosystem services that help sustain agriculture and combat climate change and biodiversity loss for the benefit of communities and future generations. Projects such as wetlands, protective belts, riparian buffers, wildlife habitats, adapted agricultural practices and other ecological solutions help purify water, increase biodiversity, sequester carbon, counteract erosion, mitigate the effects of floods and droughts, provide habitats for Pollinators and wildlife create and provide other ecosystem services.

Project New Acre, provided by ALUS, enables companies to invest in nature-based solutions in agricultural environments to deliver positive environmental, economic and social benefits in the communities where they operate, one hectare at a time. Investing in Project New Acre allows companies to strategically allocate capital and personalize their impact. Every investment with Project New Acre yields tangible, reliable and measurable results. With this financial support, farmers can produce ecosystem goods and services on their land, such as
