Ryan Reynolds invests in a Montreal “fintech” company

Canadian actor, producer and entrepreneur Ryan Reynolds announced Monday that he has invested in a Montreal company of “fintech”, a company engaged in technological innovation for financial and banking services. Through a humorous video shot visibly in the metropolis, the actor announced his investment in the Nuvei company, whose headquarters are located in the city center.

The sketch appears to have been shot at the company’s headquarters on Boulevard René-Lévesque, while in the background we can see the dome of the Marie-Reine-du-Monde cathedral. The actor begins by introducing the company’s President, Philip Fayer.

“Nuvei is a Canadian technology company. How is a Canadian tech company different from an American tech company? Phil, how many rockets is your company currently building?” asks Reynolds.

Philip Fayer begins to reply that he and his children are building some kind of toy rocket project, but Reynolds cuts him off and asks how many “real rockets” his company is building.

“You know, penises [NDLR: mot censuré dans la vidéo] gigantic monsters flying into space?” asks the actor with a wink. Mr. Fayer obviously replies that Nuvei doesn’t build rockets.

Reynolds continues a mock interview with Mr. Fayer and asks him what his vision is for the future of Nuvei. When the President replies, the actor quickly interrupts and replies that “it’s so boring.”

Nuvei’s activities

Nuvei, a global payments technology company, is dedicated to “accelerating revenue growth for its customers through payments,” according to the statement announcing Reynolds’ investment. The company, which is in a phase of “strong momentum” there in early 2023, has expanded its activities notably to Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia.

“With card acquiring services in 200+ markets, including direct local acquiring in 47+ countries, and access to 600+ alternative payment methods, Nuvei connects e-commerce businesses with their customers wherever they are in the world,” mention we also in the press release.

The President, Mr. Fayer, also welcomed the arrival of Ryan Reynolds in a somewhat more formal manner.

“We are delighted to welcome Ryan to the Nuvei family. We’re a global company, but we’re very proud of our Canadian roots and values. It is therefore a privilege to have among our investors one of the most internationally recognized Canadians, as well as an entrepreneur with such recognized business acumen,” he said.

Recall that Mint Mobile, the budget wireless carrier partially owned by Ryan Reynolds, was acquired by telecom giant T-Mobile US for $1.35 billion less than a month ago.

The actor, who has recently been linked to rumors of the Ottawa Senators purchase, is also known to have invested in companies such as American Aviation Gin and Wrexham Football Club.
