(Ottawa) Canada’s Brad Gushue advanced to the semifinals of the World Men’s Curling Championship on Saturday.
The St. John’s Skip beat Sweden’s Niklas Edin 9-1 in a qualifier at TD Place.
“We expected a closer result,” said Gushue. We were successful and I think they wanted to push the bill a little more than necessary. That gave us chances. »
The team of Gushue, Mark Nichols, EJ Harnden and Geoff Walker then meets Swiss Yannick Schwaller, the favourite.
Scotland’s Bruce Mouat plays Italy’s Joel Retornaz, who defeated Norway’s Magnus Ramsfjell 8-4.
The winners of the semi-finals play for gold on Sunday afternoon, the losers for bronze in the morning.
Edin defeated Gushue in the championship finals in Las Vegas last year en route to his sixth world title.
“We can’t be too disappointed,” said Edin. We have achieved excellent results over several years. »
Gushue has placed second in his last two appearances at the event. Olympic champion in 2006, he won his only world title in 2017 in Edmonton.
