Women’s World Cup Preview: Canada vs. Japan

Team Canada is aiming for a third consecutive world title for the first time since 2001

CALGARY, Alta. – Hockey Canada has announced the 23 players who will compete with the Canada Women’s National Team for gold on home soil at the 2023 IIHF Women’s World Championship, taking place April 5-16 at the CAA Center in Brampton, Ontario .

Three goalkeepers, seven defenders and thirteen forwards were selected by the head coach Troy Ryan (Spryfield, NS)in collaboration with Gina Kingsbury (Rouyn-Noranda), Director of Hockey Activities and Cherie Piper (Scarborough, Ont.), Responsible for scouting and player development. Members of the coaching staff for the 2022-2023 season, inclusive Kori Cheverie (New Glasgow, NS), Doug Derraugh (Arnprior, ON/Cornell University, ECAC), Rachel Flanagan (Pontypool, Ontario/University of Guelph, OUA), Caroline Ouellette (Montreal, Qc/Concordia University, RSEQ) and the goalkeeper advisor Brad Kirkwood (Calgary, AB)also contributed to the selection process.

The training includes:

  • A player who will make her first appearance at the IIHF Women’s World Championship (Serdachny);
  • Eighteen players who finished 12the Canada’s Gold Medal at the 2022 World Women’s Championships in Denmark (Ambrose, Campbell, Clark, Desbiens, Fast, Fillier, Jenner, Larocque, Maltais, Maschmeyer, Nurse, O’Neill, Poulin, Rattray, Shelton, Stacey, Turnbull, Zandee-Hart).

The ten-team tournament features Canada in Group A along with the United States, Japan, Switzerland and the Czech Republic. Group B consists of Germany, Finland, France, Hungary and Sweden.

Canada will open the tournament against Switzerland on April 5th, then take on the Czech Republic on April 7th and Japan on April 8th. The Canadian team will complete their preliminary round on April 10 against their southern rivals, the United States. All Canadian games start at 7pm ET / 4pm PT.

Before the start of the tournament, Canada will play a warm-up match against Finland on June 1ah April. More information on the preseason games will be announced in the coming weeks.

TSN and RDS, Hockey Canada’s official broadcasters, will provide comprehensive coverage and analysis of the 2023 IIHF Women’s World Championship. TSN presents the 31 matches of the tournament that will be played at the CAA Centre. RDS will broadcast all Team Canada games, two quarterfinals, the semifinals, and the bronze and gold games.

Canada has won 12 gold medals (1990, 1992, 1994, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2004, 2007, 2012, 2021, 2022) and eight silver medals (2005, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2016). ) and bronze (2019) at the IIHF Women’s World Championship.
