Canada wants to erase abortion laws
Canadian authorities on Tuesday announced their desire to overturn historic abortion and “indecency” convictions.
Canada’s government on Tuesday said it would erase historic abortion and “indecency” convictions under laws that have since been repealed, each affecting women and LGBT+ people in particular.
On Tuesday, Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino told a press conference that “criminal convictions for indecent and indecent offenses” could now be “balanced”. The announcement comes on top of a 2018 law intended to correct previous injustices and create a way for individuals to have their criminal records erased.
Justin Trudeau’s apology
A year earlier, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau formally apologized for the Canadian government’s practices and policies that have led to the oppression of LGBT+ people. “In the past, Canada has cracked down on places that were considered safe places” for LGBT+ people, such as “saunas, nightclubs and swingers clubs,” Minister Marco Mendicino said. “And as a result, the owners, employees and patrons of these places have been wrongly convicted in the name of the Penal Code,” he added.
The minister also announced that anyone convicted of abortion-related offenses would now be eligible. Canada’s Supreme Court overturned abortion restrictions in 1988, while “rough house” offenses were overturned in 2019. Requesting a criminal record wipe is free and family members or agents can do so for a deceased person.
