Canadian player victim of racism in Scotland

Scottish club St Johnstone FC, home of Canada international Theo Bair, acted quickly after being the victim of a racist act and banned the fan responsible for life.

The former Vancouver Whitecaps forward was met with hateful comments after last Saturday’s game against Aberdeen at McDiarmid Park, his club’s home in Perth. He reported the incident himself and the team responded by making sure the “trailer” never set foot in the stadium again.

“Someone who makes such comments is not welcome at our football club,” St Johnstone said in a statement on Thursday.

“What happened to me on Saturday was shocking, disturbing and unacceptable. I had only had good experiences in Perth with St Johnstone prior to this incident. […] Racism has no place in our society or in football,” added Bair, who has been playing in Scotland since 2022.

The Canadian Football Association also welcomed the Ottawa native’s formation decision.

“Canada Soccer strongly condemns all forms of discrimination and abuse and is appalled by reports of the incident that took place following a game in Scotland last Saturday involving Canadian Theo Bair,” it said on Twitter on Friday.

“The despicable and disgusting acts of some still occur too often. If they do, as a sport we must do everything we can to eradicate them. You have to talk about it when you’re in it,” added Canada Soccer.

Bair, 23, is having a tough season with just one goal and one assist in 24 games. He played two games in a Canadian uniform in 2020, scoring one goal.
