(Ottawa) Canada’s economy added 35,000 jobs last month and Statistics Canada reports that the country’s unemployment rate has remained at 5%. The federal agency adds that Quebec’s unemployment rate was 4.2% in March and employment there remained stable.

Canadian employment was little changed in February after rising sharply by 69k in December and 150k in January. The unemployment rate rose just above the record low of 4.9% recorded in June and July.

The number of employed Canadians increased in transportation and warehousing, business, construction and other support services, as well as finance, insurance, real estate and rental services and leasing. On the other hand, employment declined, particularly in construction and natural resources.

In the Maritimes, Nova Scotia’s unemployment rate remained stable at 5.7% last month, the same as in February. In the other provinces, the rate fell: from 6.3% to 5.8% in New Brunswick and from 7.3% to 6.6% in Prince Edward Island.

Statistics Canada adds that the average hourly wage in Canada rose 5.3% year-on-year last month to $33.12. Wage growth was similar to February’s 5.4%.
