Air Canada Tries Facial Recognition at Toronto and Vancouver Airports – TOM.travel

Air Canada is experimenting with a new facial recognition system at Toronto and Vancouver airports to optimize passenger journeys.

After Frankfurt, it’s the turn of two Canadian airports to test digital identity for certain Air Canada flights and at the entrance to the company’s lounge. The goal is“To offer customers the security and convenience of a new option that uses facial recognition technology to confirm identity.” This system, tested on a voluntary basis, enables the creation of a digital identity in the Air Canada application.

The traveler’s biometric data is stored and kept in the mobile application for a maximum of 36 hours, as indicated by our colleagues at ShiftsPros. The traveler can then pass through security gates and board without having to present their physical passport. According to Omar Alghabra, Canada’s Minister of Transport, the pilot will be run by Air Canada “Accelerate operations at Vancouver International Airport (YVR) and other airports where it operates while maintaining robust privacy and security standards.”
