(OTTAWA) The Commons Canadian Heritage Committee decided Monday to subpoena Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, whose company operates Facebook and Instagram.
The move comes after Meta announced last week that it intends to block messages on its social media platforms when it does so Online News Act will be adopted in Ottawa in its present form.
Bill C-18 would force digital giants to pay Canadian media for links to their journalistic content or any other use of their online news.
The Heritage Committee on Monday agreed to summon Mr. Zuckerberg to an upcoming meeting along with the company’s President of Global Affairs Nick Clegg and Meta Canada Managing Director Chris Saniga.
The parliamentary committee is also asking for the submission of internal documents from Meta and Google, which recently blocked some Canadian users from accessing news, to test a possible response to Bill C-18.
The committee also agreed Monday to conduct a new review of what it sees as abuses of power by tech giants around the world.
