Entry into junior hockey: The political class in shock

On February 3, Judge Paul Perrell of the Ontario Superior Court issued a decision in a class action lawsuit. The plaintiffs, three former junior hockey players, alleged that Canada’s three major junior hockey leagues, their teams and their managers maintained a toxic environment.

There were also testimonials from 16 other players who played for 38 of the 60 teams in the three leagues. These are in particular torture, physical and sexual assaults, kidnappings and humiliations that took place at initiations.

Plaintiffs allege a systemic problem that led to these behaviors. The certificates cover a period of 50 years.

Judge Perrell rejected the class action claim, instead proposing an individual process in which each plaintiff’s case would be heard individually.
