Capitals: Charlie Lindgren redeems himself at the right time

Charlie Lindgren found himself a full-time job in the National Hockey League with the Capitals, but the goaltender had recently lost his coach’s trust. The former Montreal Canadiens made his first start in nearly a month in Washington on Wednesday night.

It was far from perfect for Lindgren, who still walked away with a 5-4 shootout win over the Buffalo Sabers. The 29-year-old keeper will owe a lot of credit to his teammates, particularly Alexander Ovechkin and Tom Wilson, who scored crucial goals in the third period.

Check out Ovechkin and Wilson’s goals in the videos below.

Even though half of overtime was three-for-four, the Sabers held out. In the penalty shoot-out, however, the guests were frustrated when they had their last chance to recover after losing a 2-4 lead. Lindgren withstood the attempts of Alex Tuch and Tage Thompson.

On February 26, the bouncer made his final appearance against the Sabers. Darcy Kuemper was now preferred to him, despite the honest statistics of his deputy. In today’s duel, the American made 23 saves from 27 shots.

The Capitals were reunited with their captain Ovechkin after an away game due to injury. The Russian made his comeback with two points, a goal and an assist. His net, his 37th of the season, closed the gap. Wilson leveled the game to send everyone 8-1 into overtime.

Buffalo took a 3-1 lead after 20 minutes thanks to goals from Ilya Lyubushkin and JJ Peterka. Peyton Krebs had two assists and did all the work for Zemgus Girgenson’s third goal. The speedy attacker showed great patience in possession of the puck to skirt the cage before tagging to the Latvian.

The avalanche sweeps across Canada

In Toronto, the Colorado Avalanche continued their successful journey to Canada by defeating the mighty Maple Leafs 2-1 in a shootout.

Only one man could hit the target in the shootout: Nathan MacKinnon. The one involved in Mikko Rantanen’s goal beat Ilya Samsonov to give “Avs” their third straight win.

Both goals in regulation time were scored in the first period. Morgan Rielly put the Leafs ahead about ten minutes before Rantanen’s goal.

After Monday’s 8-4 win over the Montreal Canadiens, the Colorado outfit will look to end their stint north of the border with a trio of victories. Ottawa senators will try to stop them Thursday night.
