Daniel Brière was named interim general manager of the Philadelphia Flyers last Friday, but everyone agrees that “interim” title is set to disappear soon.
The Quebecer seems like the man for the job to get the ball rolling and says head coach John Tortorella is the right person behind the bench for years to come.
“I know John very well,” he first admitted Tuesday after the National Hockey League general managers’ meeting in Florida. I went through the hiring process last summer and it was my first choice.
“There were a lot of good coaches but at the time I thought he was the man for the job of rebuilding our culture that we had lost. You don’t realize how important a culture is until you lose it. Then it’s one of John Tortorella’s strengths.
“I loved what he did. The fans will look at our situation and say we’re not having a good season, but there are other evaluation criteria and one of them is what [Tortorella] has done with our players, especially young players like Cam York, Owen Tippett and Morgan Frost, who are starting to play very well under his tutelage.
At his press conference, Daniel Brière also spoke about his assumption of office and which general managers he hopes to draw inspiration from. See it in the video above.
