Head coach Tony Granato was fired from the University of Wisconsin on Monday.
The man had been at the helm of the institution’s men’s ice hockey team since the 2016-2017 season. He notably coached Montreal Canadiens forward Cole Caufield for two seasons, from 2019 to 2021.
Granato went 105-129-16 with the Badgers, who have had two losing campaigns recently.
The University of Wisconsin has 13 wins and 23 losses in 2022-23. The season came to an end last Saturday after the University of Michigan was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the “Big Ten”.
“I really appreciate how coach Granato put his heart and soul into us. Nobody is as committed to our hockey program or to the University of Wisconsin,” University of Wisconsin athletic director Chris McIntosh said in a statement.
Granato played for the Badgers during his collegiate career between 1983 and 1987. He then played 14 seasons as a winger in the National Hockey League, where he played for the New York Rangers, Los Angeles Kings and San Jose Sharks.
After hanging up his skates, he took the plunge as a coach. He worked behind the benches of the Colorado Avalanche, Pittsburgh Penguins and Detroit Red Wings before joining his alma mater.
