Defense attorney Mike Matheson made no friends in Anaheim Friday night when he fooled officials with a stealthy dive.
The Montreal Canadiens held the Ducks 1-1 in the third half as the Quebec backfield won a showdown against Trevor Zegras in CH territory. The American sensation responded by landing a glow stick on Matheson’s calf.
It is evident in the video playback that the Habs member exaggerated his reaction as he fell on the ice. Officials saw nothing but fire as Zegras received a minor penalty for shooting darts.
Karma may have defeated Matheson and CH since they couldn’t capitalize on their massive attacking opportunity. Rather, Martin St-Louis’ troops conceded the game’s only two other penalties. Mason McTavish and Jakob Silfverberg have threaded the needle on both occasions to guide theirs to victory.
Matheson has never been penalized for acting in his career. He has only been banned once, in 2018 when he injured Elias Pettersson by dangerously checking him.
