P-to-P, February 27, 2023 [AlterPresse] — Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, in a statement by online agency AlterPresse, praised the role of the Caribbean Community (Caricom) “in its efforts to facilitate an inclusive political dialogue” in Haiti.
Justin Trudeau, speaking with his Jamaican counterpart Andrew Holness on Sunday, February 26, 2023, also stressed the importance of strengthening the capacity of the Haitian National Police (PNH) to bring stability to that country.
During the exchange, Trudeau and Holness stressed the need to continue to support a Haiti-led solution to the crisis the country is facing.
The two leaders also discussed the importance of the Caricom mission to Haiti, taking place this Monday, February 27, 2023, under the supervision of Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness.
They believe it is important to mobilize a wide range of Haitian stakeholders to better understand the needs of the Haitian people and find the best way to help them.
Haiti is currently facing an unprecedented climate of terror, created with complete impunity by armed gangs who are killing and kidnapping in the context of political disagreements between various protagonists of the crisis.
De facto Prime Minister Ariel Henry met with members of the Caricom delegation led by the Jamaican Prime Minister at his official residence this Monday, February 27, 2023.
Concrete measures are urgently needed to restore a safe environment, he said at the meeting.
“This is the government’s main concern and an essential requirement for organizing elections,” he said.
For his part, the Prime Minister of Jamaica renewed Caricom’s support for the Haitian people and his desire to continue working for a return to democracy.
This special Caricom mission, made up of representatives from the Bahamas, Trinidad and Tobago and the Caricom Secretariat, is to hold preparatory meetings with a number of key stakeholders to assess the situation in Haiti.
Jamaican Secretary of State and Trade Kamina Johnson Smith and Jamaican Ambassador Rocky Meade are among the members of the delegation.
The decision to send the Caricom mission to Haiti was taken at the 44th Ordinary Meeting of Caricom Heads of Government, to be held from Wednesday 15 February to Friday 17 February 2023 in Nassau, in the Bahamas archipelago took place.
Avenues were explored that would allow the Caribbean region to continue to assist the Haitian people at political, security and humanitarian levels.
