At least that’s what Defense Minister Anita Anand suggested when she gave an update on the program on Sunday. The West Block from Global News on the recent military aid to Ukraine

“We will buy additional tanks for the Canadian Forces [FAC]’ assured Ms. Anand.

Canada on Friday pledged to provide four more Leopard 2A4s than expected, bringing the number of main battle tanks that will land in Ukraine to eight. A recovery tank and 5,000 155mm shells are also planned with this new delivery.

However, the CAF only had 82 Leopard 2 main battle tanks, in addition to 30 tanks intended for engineers. This means that Ottawa gave up almost 10% of its fleet of Leopard main battle tanks.

Minister Anand has pledged to buy replacements but has not committed to the type of vehicle Canada will procure.

“We will ensure that we use the most modern technologies that can be operated in conjunction with our allies, as we have done in the past,” Ms Anand told Global News, acknowledging that this could potentially require purchasing others main battle tank than the Leopard 2.

This German-made line of vehicles is used by many countries around the world, but it is not the only main battle tank available. The Americans rely on the M1 Abrams, the British on the Challenger 2 and the French on the Leclerc.
