FTQ | Magali Picard will be the first woman and the first Aboriginal to hold the presidency

(Montreal) Magali Picard will effectively become the new President of the FTQ – the first woman and first Aboriginal to hold the position.

FTQ President Daniel Boyer, who was also President-in-Office, announced late Monday afternoon that nominations for the positions of President and Secretary-General were now complete.

Magali Picard is alone in the running and will succeed Daniel Boyer.

At the microphone, she accepted her nomination “with great joy and enthusiasm” to the loud applause of the 1,200 delegates. “We’re going to rock together,” she exclaimed.

However, late Thursday afternoon, at the end of the FTQ Congress, she officially succeeds Daniel Boyer, who then resigns from the central union with more than 600,000 members.

Denis Bolduc, the current general secretary, is also the only contender for the Quebec Federation of Workers’ number two position.

Mme Picard comes from the large pan-Canadian union of federal employees, the Public Service Alliance of Canada. She served there as the national executive vice president, leading the long fight for compensation for victims of the Phoenix pay system.

In an interview with The Canadian Press, she said that it was her desire for social justice that first drove her towards unionism. She also described herself as a “proud Wendate of Wendake”.
