Health: Ontario will fund thousands of private surgeries

This was announced by Ontario Premier Doug Ford on Monday morning.

His goal is to reduce the current backlog of operations and interventions of this type and to relieve hospitals.

He promises that the patients will not have to pay anything out of their own pocket “apart from the parking fees” in the private clinic.

Ontarians will continue to access care through their health card and not their credit card. »

Mr. Ford specifically cites the example of Quebec, which also uses private clinics.

For him it is not an “ideological” question. Hospitals, he says, will be able to focus on more complex surgeries.

People will be able to enjoy life instead of going through pain while waiting for their surgery. »

Dangers for the public system?

However, some critics argue that the government’s plan risks draining resources, including staff, from the public health system without improving the quality of care.

Health Secretary Sylvia Jones dismisses those fears and says waiting times must be reduced.

It also ensures that current care will continue to be funded by the government, but does not preclude private clinics from offering additional services to patients at their own expense.
