Hughes acted on the ninth hole and added six birdies. His only bogey of the day, the 13th pennant, didn’t stop him from finishing his day at 66 (-7), two shots behind Americans Collin Morikawa and JJ Spaun and Spaniard Jon Rahm, all three at 64 (-9 ).
Moriwaka particularly impressed with a series of six birdies from the 10th through the 15th. Never before in his career had he achieved such a feat.
The other Canadians in the game, Corey Conners (68) and Adam Svensson (71), are 17th and 34th, respectively.
Justin Thomas, a two-time champion of that tournament, finally managed a birdie to end the day at 70 (-3). For his part, FedEx Cup point guard Seamus Power presented a first card of 68.
